Simple Machines
Maryland Institute College of Art
Environmental Design Studio
Fall 2008

The studio explores the simple machines, their self-organization into assemblages and the effect of complex systems on the built environment.  The students develop an understanding of the conceptual principals and physical properties through making and modeling.  They review multi-disciplinary drawings and diagrams explaining function and processes in non static environments and engage in discussions of the relationship of machine to society and current trends toward ‘sustainable living’ and adaptable architecture.
